Multi-factor authentication enhances your online security beyond just a username and password by requiring you to provide two or more verification factors every time you sign in or make changes to your account.

Multi-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your account, making it more difficult for unauthorized individuals to access your personal information, even if they know your password.

When setting up multi-factor authentication, you can choose one or more secure options for your second verification factor. These options include:

  1.  SMS: a one-time passcode will be sent to your mobile phone number via text message.
  2. Phone call: a one-time passcode will be sent to your phone number via a phone call.
  3. Authenticator app: you can set up a dedicated app to generate time-sensitive verification codes. Codes are generated locally on your device and cannot be intercepted.
  4. Biometrics: if your device supports biometrics, you can verify your identity using your device’s built-in fingerprint or facial recognition.

If you don't have a mobile phone, you can choose to receive one-time passcodes via a phone call to your landline.

As of June 2025, enrolling in multi-factor authentication will be mandatory for all My Canada Life users.

Authenticator apps are typically free and standard SMS and call charges may apply based on your phone plan.
