Canada  Life™ Week to Save Lives

Thank you, Canada

Thank you to all who donated blood this January and supported the 2021 Canada Life™ Week to Save Lives.

This January, we called on you to donate blood and help support Canada’s Lifeline. There were 11,694 units of whole blood and 4,101 units of plasma collected during  the 2021 Canada  Life™ Week to Save Lives. Thank you to everyone who donated.

What is the Canada Life™ Week to Save Lives?

Every minute of every day, someone in Canada needs blood, and even amidst a global pandemic, this need doesn’t stop. We partnered with Canadian Blood Services and Héma-Québec to address this need and created the Canada Life™ Week to Save Lives - a national call to action for Canadians to make a difference in their communities by donating blood or plasma.

You can still make a difference

Even though this year's Canada Life™ Week to Save Lives has finished, the need for blood never stops. Donation centres remain open and the need is greater than ever.

Visit Canadian Blood Services or Hema-Quebec to learn more about how you can donate in your community.

Why donate?

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many blood donation centres have recorded a significant drop in donations. All open appointments need to be filled to ensure the national supply meets the needs of patients, and to help all Canadians and their loved ones who are fighting to wake up healthier each day.

  • A constant need

The national blood inventory averages between a 5-to-8-day supply, which is enough for patients today - but the need for blood is constant.

  • More than just blood

The need for plasma is more than 4 times what is donated in Canada. It could take over 100 plasma donations to help treat just 1 patient for a year.

  • All types are needed

O-negative blood donors are especially needed because this universal blood type can be transfused to any patient.
