Optional Riders – Lifestyle Protection Plan

Optional benefit riders can help you further customize your Lifestyle Protection Plan disability insurance policy to suit your individual needs.

Own Occupation Rider

Provides a total disability benefit if you are unable to practice your chosen profession due directly to injury or sickness, even if you begin working again in a new career.

Regular Occupation Extender Rider

Extends the definition of total disability for the initial 24-month benefit period to the full length of your selected benefit period. As long as you are totally disabled in your regular occupation, disability benefits will be paid and you will not be required to work in another occupation.

Another version of this rider is available that extends the regular occupation period from 24 months to 60 months.

Partial Disability Rider and Extended Partial Disability Rider

These riders recognize that you may continue to be partially disabled after returning to work following a total disability or may only be partially disabled because of the injury or sickness from the start.

The benefits provided by these riders can contribute to your financial security by helping to close the gap between what you were earning before becoming disabled and what you are able to earn while partially disabled.

The partial disability benefits are available for up to 24 months and the extended partial disability benefits are available for the entire benefit period.

Residual Disability Rider

If you are not totally disabled, this rider allows a choice between receiving the partial disability benefit if you suffer a loss of time or duties in your occupation or the residual disability benefit if you suffer a loss of income.

Future Insurability Option Rider and Future Insurability with Return of Premium Option Rider

Often income rises over a person’s working years and health may deteriorate. Although most people feel they fully insure themselves when they buy a disability insurance policy, they may find the original amount of disability insurance becomes insufficient as their careers and needs change. Unfortunately, these people may not qualify medically to buy additional coverage at a later date.

These riders help alleviate this problem by guaranteeing you can buy additional coverage, subject only to financial underwriting on specified option dates, regardless of changes in your health.

Cost of Living (maximum 3% or 8% per year) Riders

Helps reduce the impact of inflation by providing yearly adjustments to the monthly disability benefit while you are on a claim.

Catch-Up Rider

Provides a lump sum payment equal to the amount not paid during the waiting period of the policy should you become totally disabled for a period of at least 180 consecutive days. This coverage is designed to help you financially “catch-up” from the impact of a disability.

Expense Equalizer Rider

If you have selected a longer waiting period (such as 90 days) to help economize on your disability insurance premium, this rider can help meet some of the expenses (such as mortgage, rent, car lease/payments, line of credit) before disability benefits begin.

Sale of Business Facilitator Rider

For business owners, if you must sell your interest in the business because of a disability, this rider helps reimburse legal and accounting costs.

First Day Accident Rider

Eliminates the waiting period and pays your full monthly disability benefit from the first day of a disability due to an injury regardless of whether the injury occurs at work.

Return of Premium (50%) Rider

Reduces the long-term cost of disability coverage if you stay healthy. This rider returns up to 50% of the yearly eligible premium paid or waived under your policy if you have had minimal or no claims after 7 years and are not disabled (and every 7 years thereafter). The amount of the return will be reduced by any disability benefits paid or eligible premium waived or refunded.

Lifetime Benefit – Accident & Graded Sickness Rider

If you become totally disabled before age 65 and remain totally disabled at age 65, a monthly benefit will be payable from age 65 for life, as long as you continue to be totally disabled.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment Rider

Provides a lump sum benefit for accidental loss of life, sight, a hand or a foot or the loss of use of a hand or a foot.

Health Care Profession Rider

Provides a monthly disability benefit if you contract HIV, Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C and legislation or regulations prohibit you from performing the substantial duties of your occupation.
